Five steps you need to do to log into your new Grinnell College email account successfully

    1. Secure your Mobile Authenticator Device — Your mobile authenticator device is the device in which you will install the Duo Mobile app, e.g., smartphone or tablet. Screen lock with PIN and encryption must be enabled.
    Apple – iOS
    • How to setup iOS PIN lock
    • Encryption is set by default; you do not need to do anything more beyond setting up iOS PIN lock to enable encryption.
    Android
    • How to setup Android PIN lock
    • Encryption may need to be set up; this is not a default on all Android devices. Consult your device manual for specific instructions. Some devices will require setting up “Secure Startup” to be turned on from the system setting for this step to be completed.
    2. Check your Operating System on your Mobile Authenticator Device — The operating system needs to meet the requirements listed below.
    Apple – iOS
    Android
    3. Check your Browser and Extensions — The Internet browser and extensions you use to connect to your Grinnell College Outlook email account (or any other Grinnell College Duo-protected service like Microsoft 365) must be up to date. See the links below for information on how to update.
    4. Download the Duo Mobile app — Download the Duo Mobile app to your mobile authenticator device, e.g., smartphone or tablet. To do so, search for “Duo Mobile” in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). The device you download the Duo Mobile app to will need to be on your person when you log into your Grinnell College Account.

If you are located in China, please read Duo's Knowledge Base article, "Does Duo Mobile work in China?"

If you do not have a compatible mobile device or prefer not to use your personal mobile device for authentication, please contact ITS by phone, +1 641-269-4901, or by using this ITS help form for new students. Your Admission Reference Number (available on your Applicant Status Page) will be needed to verify your identity. ITS can provide you a hardware token (or fob) as an alternative to mobile device.
    5. Log into your Grinnell College Outlook Email Account — After you receive your Grinnell College credentials (username and password), go to office365.grinnell.edu. You will immediately see a welcome message from Duo. Click “Next” to set up Duo mobile. You will be asked to enter the phone number for the device you would like to use as your mobile authenticator. Once your set up is complete, continue to your Outlook account by selecting "Log in with Duo."

You will need to have your Duo-registered mobile device or hardware token in your possession when logging in. After entering your Grinnell credentials, a Duo authentication screen may appear. If you are using a mobile device, select your preferred authentication method:
    • "Verified" Duo push: Enter the verification code displayed on the device into which you are logging into (ex. your computer or iPad) into the Duo mobile app (ex. on your smart phone) to complete the login process.
    • Duo mobile passcode: Get the code by opening the Duo mobile app on your registered authentication device (ex. smart phone).
    • Duo hardware token: Enter the code shown on your hardware token.
Once your preference has been indicated, Duo will default to that choice for future authentications. If at any time you would like to change your method, click "Other Options" on the Duo prompt.
