The default route in your navigation app of choice will get you here, but it will take you through some construction. Construction is exciting — our community is investing in enhancements as more and more people come our way! — but it doesn't make for the most enjoyable driving.
Here are the routes we recommend for a smooth drive to Grinnell's Office of Admission, with some great stops along the way:

Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA)
Iowa's agricultural history and prairie landscape make it a rich setting for environmental exploration. Grinnell College is home to the Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA), a 365-acre field station located about 20 minutes from campus. For decades, students and faculty have worked to restore and preserve native prairie ecosystems across this site. The area is open to visitors and features walking trails, public art, and educational resources.
Uhlenhopp Arboretum
Still wanting a nature fix? Check out the Uhlenhopp Arboretum, featuring tens of thousands of trees over the 250-acre property. The historic property was donated by Grinnell College professor Elliott Uhlenhopp, who wanted to showcase Iowa's diverse landscape and beautiful trees. The arboretum includes hiking trails, ponds, prairie, timbers, and wetlands. Uhlenhopp's cabin is even available for overnight stays!
Prairie Produce Market
Prairie Produce is a favorite Grinnell stop for students and parents alike. This family-owned market offers fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables alongside homemade specialties such as freeze-dried produce, granola mixes, salsas, jams, jellies, and Iowa's famous sweet corn. Prairie Produce is a great place to pick up snacks for the residence hall, ingredients for a family meal, or a locally made gift to remember your visit to Iowa. It's an easy stop on your way into town.

Harold "Pie" Keller Memorial (Community of Flags)
Brooklyn, Iowa, is the hometown of Harold "Pie" Keller, one of the six Marines who raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Although he appeared in Joe Rosenthal's iconic World War II photograph, Keller was not officially identified as one of the flag raisers until 2019. The outdoor memorial is open year-round and offers visitors the opportunity to learn about his remarkable story and place in one of the most recognizable photographs in American history.
Center Ground
Looking for a creative coffee stop? Pop into Center Ground for a seasonal specialty like a Canadian Cold Brew or Banana Bread Matcha. The menu features fresh coffee, specialty lattes, frappes, smoothies, protein shakes, dirty sodas, and breakfast sandwiches, making it an easy stop for a pick-me-up or a treat on the road.
The Classic Deli & Ice Cream Shoppe
Step back in time at The Classic, a local favorite inspired by the former Village Pharmacy and its old-fashioned soda fountain. Known for its nostalgic atmosphere, the restaurant serves Iowa favorites including pork tenderloins, build-your-own deli sandwiches, tuna melts, shakes, ice cream, and homemade pies. The Classic offers dine-in, carryout, and catering.

Pella's Central Park
The heart of Pella, Central Park is surrounded by shops, bakeries, and cafés and is a great place to begin exploring. Stroll among seasonal flower beds, historic monuments, the Tulip Tower, and the iconic Dutch windmill, which serves as the visitor information center. Whether you’re visiting during Tulip Time or any time of year, Central Park is open daily.
Jaarsma Bakery
Jaarsma Bakery is an essential Pella stop. The Dutch bakery has been serving visitors since 1898. Famous for its Dutch letters, puff pillows, stroopwafels, cookies, pastries, and fresh breads, the bakery is a favorite for both locals and visitors.

The Flying Elbow
Home of the 2022 Iowa Best Burger, The Flying Elbow is a wrestling-themed restaurant known for its creative smashburgers, loaded tater tots, hot dogs, and family-friendly atmosphere. Try your smashburger on cornbread, then stroll across the street to see the massive "Echo" public sculpture and explore Marshalltown’s vibrant public art and murals.
Country Variety
Since 2020, Country Variety has been offering baked goods, pies, donuts, bulk foods, and more to the community. A favorite vendor at the Grinnell Area Farmers Market, not everyone knows you can also shop their full selection at the store.
Rube's Steakhouse
The unforgettable Rube’s Steakhouse is the original “Grill Your Own” steakhouse and supper club. Open since 1973 and known for serving “the best, biggest steak anywhere,” Rubes invites visitors to choose and grill their own steak, potatoes, and side dishes from the restaurant’s exceptional selection of locally raised beef. Frozen steaks and side dishes are also available to take home or ship nationwide. Reservations are encouraged.
